A time travel through literature | Pride and Prejudice

Hi!

»Pride and Prejudice« is one of the most famous and most wonderful love stories in history of literature. That's why it is sure that it has to be in the »Time travel through literature«. The book was published in 1813 by Jane Austen, one of the most famous writers of the beginning of the 19th century. She is famous for her understanding of women and her revolutionary thinking. Other stories written by her are for example »Emma« and »Sense and Sensibility«.

»Vanity and pride are different things,
though the words are often used synonymously.
A person may be proud without being vain.
Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves,
vanity to what we would have other think of us.«

»There are few people whom I really love,

and still fewer of whom I think well.
The more I see of the world,
the more am I dissatisfied with it;
and every day confirms my belief of the
inconsistency of all human characters,
and of the little dependence that can
be placed on the appearance of merit or sense.«

The story plays in England of the 19th century where the most important aim in the life of a woman is to marry. Mrs Bennett is a big advocate of this thinking and wants to arrange the marriages of her daughters as soon as possible. In contrast her second eldest daughter Elisabeth 'Lizzy' Bennett is of the opinion that men are brainless idiots, and that only the deep sense of love will convince her of marriage. The story starts with the announcement that a big estate in the neighbourhood is inhabited again - by a rich man named Charles Bingley. The whole family is exited; also because he comes with a friend who is said to be even richer. So they all go to the little ball in the town to meet them. Instantly Mr Bingley, a very kind and likeable person, falls in love with Jane, the older sister of Lizzy. In contrary Mr Darcy, the friend of Bingley, turns out to be a handsome but unfriendly and proud count. Lizzy and Darcy do not like each other because they both injured the others vanity by Darcy insulting Lizzy and Lizzy just always saying whatever she thinks in that moment. They have prejudices of the other's stand because the counts of nobility all seem to be stuck-up and the citizens - the Bennetts - are irrational and ignorant. But by and by Lizzy finds out more about Darcy and his background and gets to know his real character and, coping with many troubles, they fall in love.

We both really enjoyed  reading this book because the story is so wonderful you just have to fall in love with it and the characters. They are all very adorable but especially Lizzy is an intelligent and self-confident woman. Her thinking is - compared with the thinking of all the other women of this time - modern and nearly revolutionary. When you get to know Darcy you think that he is horrible and you really do not like him. But by the time you'll definitely fall in love with him, because he is so caring and wonderful to Lizzy. Another character we really like is Jane, the sister of Lizzy, who always tries to help her and gives her advice.

So to sum up, we would recommend you this novel by all means and we hope that you'll enjoy it just as we did. At this point we also want to recommend you warmly the latest movie adaption, with the great actors Keira Knighley as Lizzy and Matthew Macfadyen as Darcy.

I think i'll dream of Darcy tonight! ~Liv
