Die Buchspringer

Hi!

Today we want to review the novel »Die Buchspringer« that we enjoyed reading a lot. We're sorry but we do not know if there is also an english edition of this fabulous book. So we will firstly call it by a name we think it could probably have. So, »The Bookjumpers« is written by the german author Mechthild Gläser and was released in February of this year. It tells the story of Amy Lennox who discovers the secret ability of her family to 'jump' into the story of a book.

»For a while they glanced out to the sea. With one hand
Will petted the dog behind the ears, with the other one he
screened his eyes so as to see better.
For nothing. Sherlock Holmes remained lost.«

In the beginning of the book, the protagonist Amy, a 15-year-old girl who loves reading, and her mother Alexis live in Bochum, in Gemany. Amy does not know much about her origin and family background, only that her grandmother lives in Scotland and that Alexis bunked off there when she was 17 years old and pregnant. But now in the summer vacations Alexis takes Amy to the little isle »Stormsay« where she comes from. Her mother Mairead Lennox is the Lady of Castle Lennox, a huge estate full of books. There Amy comes to know the great secret of the Lennox-Family – an arcane library. And she finds out that she has got the special power to jump directly into a book and discover the world inside. Firstly it seems to be funny to talk with Schir Khan from the Jungle Book or travel along the different stories with her new friend Werther (»The Sorrows of Young Werther« from Goethe), but then she realises that it also can be very dangerous. A mysterious thief makes trouble in the world of literature and destroys stories. Suddenly Sherlock Holmes dies a strange death, the white rabbit from »Alice's Adventures in Wonderland« disappears and there is winter in »A Midsummer Night's dream« . So her mission is to stop the thief and save the books. Of course she is not alone. Besides Werther who follows her all around she also has got friends in the real world. There is another family living on Stormsay – the Macalisters – who also have the ability to jump into books. Betsy Macalister is a horrible bitch and hates Amy but her cousin Will is a wonderful nice boy who supports Amy everywhere. By and by they fall in love and together they have to unravel mysteries, pass many adventures and cannot trust anybody.

Of course we both really love Amy because she is an intelligent and brave girl who shares our love for the written word. She is very curious and always ready to rush into a new adventure. It is clear that Will sweeps us off our feet, because he is so cute and caring and you just have to fall in love with him!
The mother Alexis is also very nice, because she tries to be there for Amy all the time, what is not always easy for her because she has to fight with her feelings and memories of this place.

In general we really enjoyed the book because we both love these little references to other books and we admire Amy for her power to jump into stories. We want to be able to do that too! Therefore we would definitely recommend the book to you and we are sure that there will be also an english edition later on.
